3-hole leg length shim instructions

OVERVIEW
The 3-hole universal leg length shim is compatible with all 3-hole road cleat systems. They are available in both 2mm and 3mm variants so can be stacked in 1mm increments from 2mm upwards. The shims are supplied with 6mm and 10mm pins as standard. If you require an extra tall stack FORM can provide longer 20mm connector pins for that purpose.
Note: When stacking multiples it is always preferable to set up the three shims closest to the cleat in the staggered configuration. Any additional shims (between the staggered shims and the shoe) should then be fitted in the inline configuration. Please see diagram below.
Steps to set up your stack (more than 1x shim):
STAGGERED CONFIGURATION
- Push the connector pins through the forward-most set of pin holes on the convex side of the shim
- To attach a second shim, place it on the concave side of the first shim and push the protruding pins through the middle set of holes in the second shim.
- To attach a third shim, place it on the concave side of the second shim, then push the protruding pins through the rear-most set of holes in the third shim.
You now have three shims set up in the staggered configuration.
To add more shims to the stack you would do exactly the same thing as you did with the third – push the pins through the rear-most holes. This will set up all additional shims in an inline configuration.
INLINE CONFIGURATION
If you’ve decided to use the inline configuration you should use either the front or middle set of pin holes for all shims. Do not use the rear holes in this configuration as it will impact the cleat position in relation to the pin heads.
Note: Always trim any protruding part of the pin shaft before fitting the stack to the shoe. Pin heads can be trimmed with a craft knife but should only be trimmed if necessary.
- Shimano SPDSL – no head trimming required
- Look KEO – no head trimming required
- Time ICLICK – trimming required
COMBINING SHIMS AND CLEAT WEDGES
The FORM shims can be combined with the FORM 3-hole cleat wedges. If using these together:
- always place the wedges between the shim and the cleat (not between shim and shoe)
- always fit the pins through the forward-most set of pin holes in the shim
FITTING THE STACK TO THE SHOE
- Turn the shoe upside down on your lap.
- Place the stack on the shoe in approximately the right place.
- Position the cleat + cleat washers on top of the shim.
- Insert 1x screw (generally the front screw is best) and screw it most of the way down.
